Biography

Metallica is an American heavy metal band, formed in 1981, which became one of the most commercially successful musical acts of recent decades. Metallica has sold more than 90 million albums worldwide, including 57 million albums sold in the United States.

  • 1982 Guitarist Dave Mustaine joins
  • 1983 Bassist Cliff Burton joins
  • 1983 Mustaine leaves and Kirk Hammett joins
  • 1986 Burton is killed in a road accident, Jason Newsted replaces him
  • 1992 Hetfield suffers burns in an onstage accident
  • 1999 Perform with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra
  • 2000 The Napster lawsuit
  • 2001 Newsted leaves, Hetfield goes into rehab
  • 2003 Robert Trujillo replaces Newsted
