Parallel Lives

Muslim waving British flag - Matt Writtle/PA
Integration, the way forward...

Parallel Lives: your views

Are Muslims and non-Muslims leading parallel lives' here in the North West? We asked for your experiences of integration or segregation. Read some of your views sent to us:

Dave from Morecambe

The BBC is encouraging parallel lives by broadcasting Asian networks, this does not aid integration

Thomas, 14, from Bury

Well i have some good friends at my school who are Muslims but when i come home it is a different case i am one of the only white people living on the street and sometimes get abused for this even though i am not racist towards any Muslim people

From Bob in Blackburn

You ask the question' What's it like being a muslim in the N West@ you should be asking what is it like being white british in the N West.' The muslims and other asian comunities have no intentions of integrating. When they announce they plan to buy up area's of property for their communities, they don't want us. I feel that I am a stranger in my own town and am considering leaving Blackburn and Britian. There never will be intergation and I fear the troubles of 5yrs ago will be nothing compared to what is going to happen.

Helen in Lancaster

I find that I am more interested in what muslim women who wear the hijab have to say. Whereas if I was to see a white woman in a very short skirt and a skimpy top. I think more about oh she is dressing in a sexual manner, and am not as interested in her opinion. I think that the majority of the bad press comes from the tabloid press. Whose responsibility it is to sell newspapers even if it means stirring up trouble. I also think that we as a society should not pass judgement on muslim women who wear the hijab when young women throughout the North West are going towards the opposite extreme.  I think if muslim women choose to wear the veil and hijab then they should. All people should be willing to learn more about the world outside of the United Kingdom, and other cultures. From a white liberal

Jennifer in Bolton

I was interested to hear that the key to understanding other communities was in education. I teach 7 year old children, both white and muslim, and they happily relate and play together, easily accepting differences in dress or culture. This is the result of the nature of children, not 'multi-cultural education'.  If children at such a young age are not frightened of these differences, then when do the problems begin?

L Barton from Atherton, Lancs

why is it that we as a nation have previously integrated very well with jews, sihks and other religions. Yet the muslims are demanding  and creating such a high public and media personality

Allan in Middleton

Whenever people debate  Islam in Britain , there always seems to be a confusion between race and religion.

Paul from Darwen

i am sick of hearing about the so called british muslim. there is no british catholic parliment. it seems that everything that asian have to say it always includes a religion. well enough of hearing about the religion and setting up another muslim group through a council or a parliment , hows about standing on your two feet and saying yes i am british just like the rest of the british society who may be catholic, protestant athiast jewish...we are british ,....bring back britain. people are fed up of the one sided muslim regime.

Diane from Manchester

I go on holiday to muslim countries and i adhere to the way they expect me to dress so why should it be any different for the muslim who choose to live in this country i have heard about shops and stores not allowing youths in wearing hoods hiding there identity the same should go for these women
