 | | The Library Trust – The A To Z Of Mathematics |
Practically everything about The A To Z Of Mathematics is on the weeny side. It’s a mini-album, half the songs were recorded with the sort of budget that requires a front room being used as a studio, each and every one of them has the tiny pleasure of morning dew and even Rob Edwards himself (the mainstay of the Trust) isn’t on the towering side. What is big is the beauty that shines out of his songwriting. That Beyond Blue, Edwards’ first outing, still has a lulling charm is without doubt, but his knack for finding a gentle wonder in simple chords and few well chosen strings runs across all the album. Treats like sweets rain from the compositions, from the twinkling A Bruised Knee to the slow snow pleasure of My Town On TV, from the taut splendour of A Shove In The Mouth to As Broken As You Think’s swirling hymn crescendo; from, in fact, the opening breath to the very end. Small may well be the Library Trust’s watchword but in truth, a songwriter of this sort of ability can't stay that way for very long. |
