The Great Unheard

Danny Saul
Danny Saul

Danny Saul

in his own words...
Danny Saul has a work ethic that you can hear in his songs. Time is of the essence but perfectionism is par for the course. His is a world darkened by regret and misgivings, only brightened by the speed at which melodies tumble out.

What We Think:

"So far is Saul’s solo stuff from his Tsuji years that it’s almost not worth mentioning them. However, what they do have in common is an intensity, which he now whispers when he used to scream. Bleak, brooding and black as a devil’s heart, this is Willy Mason singer/songwriter territory that’s more than worth having a closer look at. Just don’t stare too hard into the darkness, you might just topple in…"
Chris Long

Emerging from Albini-endorsed Tsuji Giri, Saul’s approach to his music is all-consuming. On this, his second solo EP, he fleshes out his absorbing avant garde folk with layers of electric guitar, vocals and drums.

If ‘Signs1’ has a haunting claustrophobia and ‘Cuts‘ aches with frustration, that’s because Saul feels comfortable building up his songs alone, surrounding by a variety of instruments, in his dusky Manchester flat.

As well as three original songs, Saul has included his cover of Jandek’s ‘I’m Ready’. Inspired by the reclusive Houston-based musician, the track was originally recorded for broadcast on a Pittsburgh radio station hosting a Jandek open mic night.

“It has an element of finality to it, so I knew it would be the closing track,” says Saul, “It’s surprising to me that it presents itself as the most optimistic sounding thing on the EP! Everything before it is pretty bleak...”
