Emerging from Albini-endorsed Tsuji Giri, Saul’s approach to his music is all-consuming. On this, his second solo EP, he fleshes out his absorbing avant garde folk with layers of electric guitar, vocals and drums. If ‘Signs1’ has a haunting claustrophobia and ‘Cuts‘ aches with frustration, that’s because Saul feels comfortable building up his songs alone, surrounding by a variety of instruments, in his dusky Manchester flat. As well as three original songs, Saul has included his cover of Jandek’s ‘I’m Ready’. Inspired by the reclusive Houston-based musician, the track was originally recorded for broadcast on a Pittsburgh radio station hosting a Jandek open mic night. “It has an element of finality to it, so I knew it would be the closing track,” says Saul, “It’s surprising to me that it presents itself as the most optimistic sounding thing on the EP!
