The Bluetones at Academy 2 - 8/10

Kelly Wood (gig: 19/03/06)
You’d be forgiven for remembering The Bluetones as being a moody, melancholic band firmly rooted in the days of Britpop. However, a decade on from the release of their debut, Expecting to Fly, the band are going stronger than ever.

Seemingly having left their dark, reflective tunes behind them, they rock’n’roll their way through the night.

Treating their nostalgia-searching audience to a couple of early classics, Bluetonic and the ever impressive Slight Return, as well as some of their more quirky numbers, namely their cover of Sail On Sailor and b-side Colorado Beetle, they give an eclective mix; every song receiving the response of a hit single.

Twelve years since their first gig and they seem as fresh as a new band, yet somehow comfortably old, having changed only for the good of their music. A high dynamic is maintained throughout, as the band remain chipper and everyone else sings along, happy to be involved.

Audibly excited, and quite rightly so, about their new record deal, The Bluetones leave with smiles on their faces and, no doubt, new songs in their hearts.
