Basement Jaxx at the Apollo - 7/10

Ciaran Gilligan (gig: 18/06/05)
Despite, for some reason, choosing a support act that are so bad they sound like a crap Cleopatra tribute band doing S Club Junior numbers, Basement Jaxx managed to redeem their musical integrity with a fresh and funky set at the Apollo.

Kicking things off with Romeo and recent hit Oh My Gosh, they deliver hit after hit, concentrating mainly on the tracks from their singles compilation that spawned this tour.

The show is live in the true sense of the word, in that Basement Jaxx bring all of the special guests you hear on the records with them, resulting in a massively varied collection of singers, dancers, samplers and musicians, rather than just two blokes on stage fiddling with laptops.

The lightshow is fantastic too, adding colour and spectacle to the show. Audience participation is a key element also, whether it be the call and response command of "When I say basement, you say JAXX!" or the general everyone-must-now-go-mental rule that is deployed during the closing Where’s Your Head At.

It's all good stuff and Glasto should be better for them. Whether they can truly stand in for Kylie remains to be seen but they’ve definitely got the stage show for the job!

a very poor review indeed. you wolud expect the reviewer to at least know which songs they are listening too. it was a fantastic gig and deserved a 9 out of ten.

Mrs Fielding
You didnt go to this gig, that or you were not paying attention. Things kicked off with Good Luck and ended with Bingo Bango! not Oh My Gosh and Wheres your head at! 7 out of 10? So where were the 3 points lost then? you do not explain why you give this 7. The support band co-incidentally was called Go! Team (you should know this) and I suggest you go and buy their album - "Thunder Lightning, Strike" which is an absolute belter. poor review. This gig deserves at least 9 if not 10.

Dave Fielding
When the support band is mentioned - I hope the reviewer isn't referring to the Go! Team? For shame. If so, then I expect a full and frank apology pretty soon!! The Go! Team are an exceptional band. Very similar to the Avalanches - so they make a great warm up band for the Basement Jaxx (they're even headlining stages at Glastonbury and Leeds festivals this year). Oh, and the Jaxx were top notch - you'll be hard pressed to find an act around today that offers as much entertainment as Basement Jaxx. Thoroughly recommended.

Mulgie
An absolute sauna in there but still worth every penny - A carnival atmosphere and they rocked the place to the ground! ;)

Gor
reviewer.. you are a fool this is possibly the worst review I have ever heard did you even go to the gig?

Lee, Manchester
Come on Ciaran - if you weren't there (or in the bar for most of the show) just say so! They didn't open with Romeo, it was good Luck. And they ended with Bingo Bango, not Where's Your Head At!
