Ocean Colour Scene at the Apollo - 7/10

Zannah Ingraham (gig: 29/04/05)
With the Apollo awash with sea of free lighters, Ocean Colour Scene gigged like it should be done with nothing less than a classic indie performance.

Suitably warmed up by the rocky clarity of support act Fleet, the assembled old faithful were poised and ready for a little OCS magic to grace the stage.

Literally taking a back seat by the drums throughout the string of classic anthems which were to intersperse the set, Simon Fowler let the tracks speak for themselves from the start with understated style.

For a band who have made the running anthem their own, it was no surprise that it was favourites like Riverboat Song, The Day We Caught the Train and You Got It Bad that got the best reactions of the night from the sing along crowd, who could have completed the set without the band even being there.

Despite being technically strong, it has to be said that the band’s new material was met with a definite air of indifference from the majority of the crowd, who appeared to have gathered more for the greatest hits than anything else. But then, if hearing the rallying chorus of an Apollo full of fans singing the likes of We Don’t Want to Fight No More isn’t enough to convince you that Ocean Colour Scene are still worth the ticket price then nothing will.

They may not have produced anything to match the greatness of their early albums, if this performance is anything to go by, there’s nothing to say that there isn’t a little more greatness left to come.
