The Used at the Academy

Following the recent trend of mainstream post-hardcore bands Thrice, Thursday et al, The Used had sold out the Academy, a rather large venue for a band revered for their energy and stage dynamics.

With bands such as The Used, more at home in the smaller venues where crowd intimacy and high energy levels are more apparent, it is always a pressing matter whether or not the leap to these bigger venues will quash most of what made them originally appealing.

It was immediately apparent that the band had not lost their energy. Their opening salvo was fast, raw and passionate. Recent single Take It Away garnered a lot of movement from the throng. On the whole, the band neglected their debut album too much, only playing a handful off it, and favouring the new material. This is justified, after all, this is a tour promoting the new album, but the reality is that the
material off the first album is better, and much more suited to a live setting. However, tracks like Box Full Of Sharp Objects and the disillusioned teen-anthem Taste Of Ink did go someway to satisfy this.

Maybe Memories triggered a huge surge of action from the crowd, the place teeming with bodies being thrown around. And then, the band were done, off the stage, and the lights were up, in what seemed like a split second. I wasn’t alone in saying that the length of the set was disappointing. With the inclusion of a few more tracks of their debut, it could have been made into a more satisfying show. But I was just left wanting more.
