De-Lovely
(Directed by Irwin Winkler, starring Kevin Kline, Jonathan Pryce and Ashley Judd)

video WATCH the trailer for De-Lovely: slow - medium - fast (Real Player required)

Kevin Kline, as an aging Cole Porter, sits alone in his New York apartment. He is visited by a stranger, Gabe (Jonathan Pryce), who, like the Ghost of Christmas Past, guides Porter through a musical revue based on his life.

Instantly, a structure is formed and the couple can play with the real and the imaginary via the not always reliable route of memory.

The primary theme revisited here is the platonic relationship the homosexual Porter had with his wife Linda, played with poise by Ashley Judd.

Yet for all the talk and implications of sex outside the marital bed, De-Lovely is a strangely dispassionate affair.

rarefied

On her death bed Linda reminds Porter that their time together was not always good.

But the dark undertones of her loneliness and self-sacrifice as his muse-cum-spouse don't cut much ice because the film remains rarefied and sexless.

At least there are glorious songs, energetically warbled by a host of modern pop stars, to keep us enthralled.

Although singers like Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, Mick Hucknall, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Nathalie Cole, and the truly awful Robbie Williams seem to sit there like out of date product placement.

suz grogan
Supersize Me - An amazing romp through the world of fast food, focussing particularly on MacDonalds as they claim it is a "healthy product". Although an unlikely scenario, living for a month on a diet of MacDonalds' fare is anything but nutritious and serves as a timely reminder about the importance of a balanced diet. Compelling - Big Mac & Fries anyone!?!
