"Rachael
Hoyle and Michael Rawsthorne, Scouts from Preston, raised
£370 at a Quiz Night on Friday (11 March 2005)
at the Phurlby Club in Ederton Road. They would like
to thank Karen Worthington who helped with the planning
and running of the evening. Karen works at the Preston
branch of Barclays Bank, who generously agreed to put
an extra 50p in for each £1 they raised. This
increased the total to £555.
Rachael,
who a second year engineering apprentice at BAE Systems,
and Michael who works for Booths are both going on 'PROJECT
UGANDA 2005', the West Lancashire Scouts community project
to build a community centre in South Eastern Uganda.
Michael
explained why they were going - "So often we see
pictures on TV and in the papers showing the hardships
suffered in Africa. I want to make a difference, and
to meet and work with the people who will benefit."
The
Community Centre will be base for the travelling medical
services - an immunisation and education centre to teach
people about cleanliness, aids/HIV and malaria. It will
also be used for groups such as Scouts and Guides in
the Kabale
region.
Rachael (18) has been in Guiding since she was five,
and Scouts since 13, she says "I hope I can give
something back to Scouting, both in Africa and by bringing
my experiences back and telling people here what it's
really like, and how much we should be helping." by Barbara Ashcroft, West Lancashire Scouts
