Down the pit

Conditions down the pit were difficult and dirty, despite some improvements in conditions during the 1950s. Pit ponies were used to help with the heavy work. Miners had to breathe in coal dust and safety conditions were not as stringent as today. The miners worked extremely hard, but there was a strong camaraderie and community spirit.
