Some
interesting facts about Bridlington:
1086:
"Bretlinton" is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Later it was called
"Burlington"...
the forerunner of modern Bridlington. 1871:
Six local lifeboatmen are killed in "The Great Gale" which sank
shipping in Bridlington Bay. 1883:
Bridlington's streets are lit by gas for the first time. 1911: The John Bull seaside rock factory .... which now makes
rock for towns all over the world is founded, and is still a thriving
business today. 1932: The Spa Royal Hall is built in just five months. It's
predecessor has been destroyed in a huge fire. 1993: Bridlington Town football club win the FA Vase at Wembley.
Other
unusual facts:
The original
town lay two miles inland .... but it expanded to the coastline when
tourism became popular in the 19th century.
The original town centre lay in what's now called the "Old Town".
Bridlington Market was held there for the last time in 1910. In 2000
Bridlington acquired it's own town council.
Bridlington is the home of the official museum of the East Riding
of Yorkshire. It's housed at Sewerby Hall ... a stately home owned
by the East Riding Council.
It houses a collection of memorabilia linked to the adventures of
the Hull born flying ace Amy Johnson.
The National Domino Championships are held annually in Bridlington.
In one year scuffles broke out between rival fans and now security
guards are employed to prevent any recurrence of Britain's only known
case of "Domino Hooliganism".
