The Continuity IRA is a hard-line republican group violently opposed to any peace agreement not based on a united Ireland.
It has its origins in a split in the Provisional IRA in 1986, which was brought about by the Provisionals dropping of so-called 'abstentionism'. (Abstentionism banned republicans from taking their seats in the Dail, the Republic of Ireland's parliament, since the IRA did not recognise either the Republic or Northern Ireland.)
At the same time, Republican Sinn Fein split off from Provisional Sinn Fein, although the party denies any connection with Continuity.
Continuity IRA was believed to be responsible for a series of bombings between 1996 in 1998.
