CD review by Toxic Pete

Mudball Demo

Pete Brown, AKA Toxic Pete, is an international music reviewer based in Worcester. He's regularly approached by major record labels to comment on their latest releases. Read his views on one local CD...

Hey, I love this! Mudball have risen from the scattered waste of Girls Love Ponies, Jacobs Ladder and Bad Taste, and I have to say they've made a good fist of things with this two track demo. Two tracks, two gems... too few!

Mudball

It would appear that from day one Mudball have managed to come up with a distinctive, signature sound and style which should stand them up in front of their, rather more ordinary, contemporaries. Opening with the impressively diverse and varied 'Day Glows', you can instantly hear what Mudball are about; great energy, impressively conceived and delivered song, unusual vocal sound, a real solid and interesting song this. 'Day Glows' sounds like its been lovingly developed to be what it is now; there appears to have been quite a lot of thought gone into the structure and dynamics and the song's all the better for that time and energy - it's a cracker!

"The energy is immense, the vibe is exciting, the drive is adrenalin fuelled."

Toxic Pete

'Scooby To Chew' is an even higher energy work; it belts along and rocks pretty damn hard and Mudball show the power and precision that make them the force they are, or at least could and should be. Not content to have a great lead vocalist, Mudball also show great vision and depth by being able to provide really impressive harmony vocals too - more depth, more colour, more of that 'something different'.

So, just two tracks, but two really impressive works that say a great deal about the attention grabbing Mudball. The energy is immense, the vibe is exciting, the drive is adrenalin fuelled. Mudball's sound is memorable and impressive, the vocal 'treatment' with its slightly wavering (not quite vibrato) quality is instantly recognisable and pretty show-stopping. Mudball have quickly gelled into one helluva good band and show massive potential in just these two tracks. An excellent demo work from the gut-churning rock'n'rollers Mudball - tasty, tasty, very very tasty!

You can listen to all of the latest music from across the two counties on the Friday Session Introducing... every week from 7pm, on BBC Hereford & Worcester.
