Fabulous in your 50's

by Meg Hanlon, style guru
The resident style expert to the Katie Johnson programme, Meg Hanlon from Colour Me Beautiful, gives tips on how to look great after you've passed 50.

With all the focus being on younger people it’s easy to feel that once you get past a certain age you become invisible. This is no surprise when you consider that in the high profile world of the fashion model even 25 is considered old!

There are, however, many women in their fifties who continue to look amazing. Some famous examples include Kim Basinger (53), Sigourney Weaver (57) and Jane Seymour (58).

They may be lucky enough to have personal trainers and designer wardrobes but don’t let that put you off. It is possible to look and feel fabulous in your fifties in a few easy steps:

1 Keep up to date

It’s easy to get stuck in a time-warp if you’re not careful. Wearing the same clothes as you did twenty years ago is ageing, even if they have come back into fashion, there will be differences! Make sure your wardrobe evolves and that you add new styles every now and then.

2 Add some colour

If you want to disappear then you can happily fade away in beige or stay safe in black. A great way to give yourself an instant lift is by adding some colour. If you’re a bit nervous about that then don’t choose anything too bright. A splash of colour with a new bag can make a big difference. The supermarkets have some great, inexpensive styles.

3 Start from the inside

Don’t have the confidence yet to try something new?  You can do it without anybody else knowing by treating yourself to some matching lingerie. It will make you feel better and maybe then give you the confidence you need to add something new on the outside.

4 Create instant glamour

The main focus of our appearance is the face so to add an instant boost emphasise your eyes with some brown (not black) mascara, and lip-gloss.

5 Look after yourself

When you are used to looking after other people all the time you can lose sight of who you are and let yourself go. Don’t feel that spending time and money on yourself is selfish – you are important too and you deserve it!
