Bigbury-on-Sea
is in the South Hams - and Burgh Island is situated just off the
beach.
The beach at Bigbury is a mix of mainly sand and some shingle and
it's run by South Hams District Council.
Facilities are: toilets, disabled visitors' facilities, disabled
access to the beach, and a slipway.
There
is first-aid and lifeguards on hand in the summer.
The
beach has a dog restricted area, and there is an area for moored
bathing rafts.
The
beach is
backed by low cliffs, and on
one side lies the River Avon estuary.
There
is also a local shop and post office near the beach in Ringmore
Drive.
Burgh Island is accessible across a sand spit at low tide and via
tractor at high tide.
How to get to Bigbury Beach: From the A379 between Modbury
and Aveton Gifford, turn on to the B3392 to Bigbury.
Pass through Bigbury village (where there are also local shops)
and follow the road to Bigbury on Sea, where you'll find the car
park.
