One of the great things about modern technology is that it enables
us to take a completely different view of familiar things.
Take the South Devon coastline, for example, and the southern parts
of Dartmoor.

across the inner harbour, Torquay |
These are among the most photographed areas in the country, and you'd
think there was nothing new to see.
But
with panoramic cameras, a new dimension is added to even the most
photographed land and seascapes.

South Devon photographer Kevin Cowell obviously knows and loves this
part of the world...he's gone to all the best spots and taken photos
from angles which only locals really know.
There's the view from Livermead across Tor Bay to Torquay; the estuary
at Salcombe, Haytor at sunrise, reflections on Slapton Ley; Dartmouth;
Cockington; the harbour ar Brixham; and a snow covered Dartmoor.

Of all the places featured, Torquay takes pride of place.
Cowell says: "The English Riviera and its surrounding area is
one of the most beautiful in the United Kingdom.
"Those of us who are fortunate enough to live here sometimes
take it for granted. Living and working in the Torbay area all my
life, I discovered that it was far more of a challenge to photograph
your own backyard.

"It was necessary for me to look anew at the landscape in order
to capture its essential qualities."
He's managed to do that in this 144-page hardback, which features
entirely colour photographs, with no text other than an explanation
of where the place is.
All photos by Kevin Cowell, used with
permission of the publishers.
