It grew enormously in the second part of the 19th Century - a far cry from the swampland it used to be! Read on! Alvaston is a large suburb, about two miles south of Derby city centre. A former Saxon village, Alvaston probably owes its name to to Allwald. Rapid expansion came in the second half of the 19th Century and in 1904 the electric tram replaced the horse-bus service and, with the advent of the motor car, London Road became the A6. ![]() Serene scene in Alvaston Park Alvaston also once had its own cinema, the Rex, which opened in 1925 and closed in 1966. Alvaston is home to an amateur radio club - one of the country's oldest - its existence dates back almost a century. A haunted Morris Minor car was reportedly bought from an Alvaston dealership in 1981. The owner of the car gave up driving it after hearing a series of strange noises and finally having her shoulders grabbed by a mystery presence!
