What is the Transforming Streets and Squares project?

The project is Derby Cityscape's vision for transforming the spaces between Derby's Cathedral Quarter, the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, the River Derwent, and the planned new Riverlights bus station.

In Brief

The proposals focus on how the area can be transformed with new and improved public open spaces and particularly how maximum access can be achieved to the River Derwent, which is a unique feature of the city centre.

What would change?

Derby Cityscape says the key aspects of the proposals are...

  • Re-locating the Korean War Memorial onto Osnabruck Square, which would also be re-designed to include a new orangery building named after Sir Peter Hilton surrounded by seating and public open space
  • Developing the surface car park on the corner of Amen Allen and Full Street into a residential area surrounded by public open space and niche shops more befitting the Cathedral Quarter’s unique identity
  • Enhancing the existing 1970’s Cathedral extension, facing Full Street, with a glazed extension sympathetic to the existing Georgian architecture to house enhanced visitor attractions
  • Creating an open air event space beside the Cathedral with better access and views to Cathedral Green and the river
  • Creating a Civic Quarter along Corporation Street with new offices, facilities, and public spaces that are attractive and appropriate to people of all ages
Remove barriers to pedestrians by taking out the the large roundabouts along Corporation Street and replacing them with smaller 'square-abouts' featuring inspirational public art reflecting Derby’s status as a centre of excellence for art, technology and science
  • Transforming the existing Council House car park on Corporation Street into a public open space with direct pedestrian access to the river
  • Improving pedestrian and cycle routes
  • Improving the urban landscape with more seating, tree planting, and higher quality lighting

When might it happen?

Proposals for future development and the feedback from a recent public exhibition will be put before Derby City Council in September.

Westfield has sucked the lifeblood out of the "Cathedral Qtr". So i dont understand which retailers will move to these new developments.
