Complaint
The programme led with the news of an attack by American forces on nuclear facilities in Iran. In the course of a panel discussion the Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat described the Fordow facility as “a nuclear capability that is built specifically and totally for the murder of Jews in Israel”. A viewer questioned the accuracy of this statement (on the grounds that the Fordow facility was intended for civil purposes) and complained that it had gone unchallenged by Laura Kuenssberg. The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s editorial standards of accuracy.
Outcome
It would have been clear to viewers that Mr Tugendhat was not stating an incontrovertible fact but expressing an opinion about a facility whose intended purpose is a matter of conjecture for those not privy to the thinking of the Iranian authorities. As his opinion was effectively challenged by another member of the panel, there was no occasion for Ms Kuenssberg to challenge it.
