Complaint
A viewer complained the programme’s coverage of Reform UK’s annual conference was biased in the party’s favour. The ECU considered whether it met the standards for impartiality set out in the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines.
Outcome
The report formed part of a sequence which opened with coverage of the reshuffle of the UK government and the decision to replace the Secretary of State for Scotland. This was followed by the item from the party conference of Reform UK, including extracts of a speech by the party leader, Nigel Farage, and then an interview with a political correspondent, Phil Sim. In the ECU’s view the coverage of Reform UK’s conference was proportionate, factual in tone and limited in its agenda. There were no policy statements which might have suggested the need for a rebuttal. Reference was made in the interview with Mr Sim to the challenge from Reform UK in Scotland, which rightly took into account the current state of opinion polling.
