Complaint
The programme investigated the ongoing controversy over the Lucy Letby case. Two viewers who considered Ms Letby to have been wrongly convicted complained that it gave a misleading impression by omitting points which (in their view) cast doubt on the evidence against her presented at her trial, and by including the presenter’s subjective opinion of her performance in the witness box. The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s editorial standards of accuracy.
Outcome
In the ECU’s view, the programme examined the main grounds for doubting some of the evidence which had led to Ms Letby’s conviction and, though not exhaustive, was duly accurate in that respect. The Presenter, who had been present during the trial, offered a professional judgement (rather than a subjective opinion) of Ms Letby’s responses to questioning.
