Complaint

A viewer complained an interview with Zia Yusuf from Reform Uk was rude, aggressive and showed bias against the interviewee. The ECU considered whether it met the standards for impartiality set out in the BBC Editorial Guidelines.

Outcome

Viewers expect senior members of political parties, such as Mr Yusuf, to be held to account for their party’s policies and on occasions to face robust questioning.  When there is an interview with a single politician one of the roles of the presenter is to reflect other points of view and examine what is said.

In this case there was a clear editorial justification for the presenter to pose challenging questions on key areas of policy such as Reform UK’s tax and spending proposals and the performance of councils run by Reform UK.

In the ECU’s view Mr Yusuf was provided with ample opportunity to answer the questions put to him and this allowed viewers to reach an informed judgement on what he had to say.
