Complaint

A listener complained the programme misrepresented the SNP policy on Scottish independence.  The ECU considered whether it met the standards for accuracy set out in the BBC Editorial Guidelines.

Outcome

During an interview with the leader of the Scottish Greens, the presenter suggested the SNP’s policy was that the only mandate for an independence referendum would be for the SNP to get a majority of seats at next year’s election.  The ECU noted delegates at the SNP’s October conference had adopted a motion specifically defining the SNP approach to the 2026 election campaign.  That motion endorsed a strategy of seeking a mandate for independence if the SNP itself won a majority of seats – described by the party as “the only uncontested way to deliver a new vote on Scotland’s future”.  In that context, the presenter’s reference was a sufficiently accurate shorthand description of the position adopted by the party for that campaign.
