Complaint
This item on the Live News page of bbc.co.uk reported President Trump as putting the civilian death toll in Gaza at 70,000. A reader complained that this was inaccurate because President Trump had not distinguished between civilian and combatant fatalities. As a consequence of his complaint, BBC News changed the article and added the following note:
Correction 10 February: An earlier version of this post suggested Mr Trump was talking about the civilian death toll. The post has been amended to make clear he did not distinguish between civilians and combatants, citing the probable overall death toll at 70,000.
The complainant argued that the inaccuracy required a “standalone correction or clarification with appropriate prominence”.
Outcome
In the ECU’s judgement the amendment and explanatory note, though they came some time after the error had been pointed out, were appropriate and sufficient, and that publication of a summary of the ECU’s finding would meet any remaining need for a standalone correction. On this basis, the ECU found that the issue of complaint had been resolved.
