Hetty Feather's Diary: Mrs Calendar's Secret

My name's Hetty Feather - and this is my diary.

I’ve always wanted to be a writer! That’s why I’ve always kept a journal. I like looking back over my life, day by day, and having memories jump out at me. Sometimes, it makes me laugh when I read back and think of all the adventures we got up to in the Foundling Hospital. Sometimes, it almost makes me cry when I read about Matron locking me in the Tench and all the awful things she did.

Most of my writing has always been for me – to treasure my memories. So, writing an article for Mr Calendar’s newspaper to help Jack prove his innocence was really different. This time, I was writing to help someone. And it worked! Even though I had to pretend the article was written by a man just so Mr Calendar would read it, swallowing my pride was all worth it in the end.

I may not be a published author but now I know my writing was put to good use! Jack’s back in the garden and not locked up in jail, thank goodness. At last, everyone knows that he’s a good a person who was trying to help his family. He’d do anything for them!

But what does Mr Buscombe, Miss Emily’s tutor, want from his family?! He’s Mrs Calendar’s secret son! But why is he here using a false name? And what does he want - to reunite with his mother or cause trouble?

I finished my duties in record time, read my responses below.

Hetty Feather replies: xunchaXOXO: Dear Hetty, I think that Mr Buscombe only called himself Samuel because he didn't want anyone to know at that time that he was Mrs Calendar's secret son. I strongly believe that Charles wants to reunite with his mother so then maybe she will tell him why she she gave him away. Hetty Feather: Dear xunchaXOXO, Thank you for your letter. I’m so glad you think that Mr. Buscombe wants to reunite with his mother. After all, Ida gave me away but not because she didn’t love me! I don’t want Mrs. Calendar to be upset if he causes trouble. But I’m still not sure about him! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: U17064108: Dear Hetty, Mrs Calender's secret has got back to Brody and Lady Grenford - if they confront anyone about it warn them! And tell Mr Buscombe that you know! Hetty Feather: Dear U17064108, Thank you for your letter. Do you really think that Brody and Lady Grenford know about Mrs. Calendar’s secret? How can they? Are they sneaky enough to try to find out? It makes me think that I can’t trust anyone at Calendar Hall right now – except my friends! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: Anyacorn: I've just finished the episode and I think Charles is here to cause trouble as he said he was sent to Calendar Hall to spy on the people there. He must have been sent by Matron as she said she knew a Charles who was Mrs Calendar's son, so she must want to find out some things about Mrs Calendar or get some revenge. Hetty Feather: Dear Anyacorn, Thank you for your letter. Oh no – if Matron is involved in anything then there could be trouble! So who am I to believe? I just want Mrs. Calendar to be happy. All I can do is be watchful of everyone and hope no one is here for revenge! I hope it all turns out fine! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: buzzingbea: I think that he just wants to be with his mother but as Matron sent him here you just can't be sure. As you know it is hard to grow up without parents and you know how that feels so maybe if he comes back you could try and talk to him. It is slightly suspicious that he used a fake name though. I wonder if it was Matron that suggested he used a fake name or whether it was his idea. Hetty Feather: Dear buzzingbea, Thank you for your letter. I feel the same – I just can’t be sure! I certainly know how it was to grow up in the Foundling Hospital. Perhaps Mr Buscombe feels sad and mixed-up and that’s why he’s using a false name? I’d like to ask him but I’m afraid of trouble! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: BlueMassiveFarmer: Dear Hetty, Well done for freeing Jack from prison! I think Mr Buscombe truly wants to reunite with his mother. Maybe try questioning him and seeing what he says. P.S. What are your tips for writing? I would love to know! Hetty Feather: Dear BlueMassiveFarmer, Thank you for your letter. I’m so happy I could help Jack, it meant such a lot. If Mr Buscombe does want to unite, then I’ll be happy for them too. But if I question him, what if he won’t tell me? And write each day in your journal – try it! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: U16786785: Charles is getting into some bad habits. I think that he wants to cause trouble more than reuniting with his mother. He shouldn't be sneaking into Mrs Calendar's room and making out Miss Constance is a lair, I wouldn't trust him ever. He is definitely working with Matron and is going to get into some BAD, BAD TROUBLE! Hetty Feather: Dear U16786785, Thank you for your letter. Oh dear me – do you think he will bring trouble to Calendar Hall? I don’t want Mrs Calendar to be heartbroken. She must have been sad enough when she had to give him away. If Matron is behind this though, then I’m scared! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: StarstoneBaseballSinger: First of all, well done from releasing Jack from prison. It wasn't the same without him and it was good that people saw that he was innocent. I would be careful around Mr Buscombe as I think that he will be at Calendar Hall to cause trouble. But you should also give him a chance to explain why he acted that way. Hetty Feather: Dear StarstoneBaseballSinger, Thank you for your letter. I agree – it wasn’t the same without Jack around. I missed him! Now everyone knows he’s innocent. Though I wish I knew if Mr Buscombe was. Perhaps if I talk to him, it might help. But what if it all goes wrong? Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: cloud9: I think Matron wanted to cause trouble and told Mr Buscombe all sorts of lies. He probably feels resentment and hope. He might feel like you did while searching for Ida. You should try to keep out of is as much as you can because you could lose you job. Be careful of Brody and look out for Jack. Be careful. Hetty Feather: Dear cloud9, Thank you for your letter. I do try to be careful but it’s hard when you are trying to help too! It’s the same when I was fighting to free Jack. I had to do what I could and hope for the best. I think Mr Buscombe might feel that way - but once I found Ida, I was happy! Yours, Hetty Feather.
