My name's Hetty Feather - and this is my diary.

I trusted my instincts and I was right! There was someone hiding in the woods - but I didn’t expect it to be Vince. He must have been terrified of the army to run away like that. He was always the tough one at the Foundling Hospital so it gave me such a shock to find out he was here!

I got a shock about Brody too. My instinct was wrong about her! I thought I could trust her to help Vince but she betrayed him and me. And she got little Lizzie to do her dirty work for her because Brody knows that Lizzie wouldn’t have dared to say no.

Lizzie could hardly look up from the table when we were having tea. All she did was silently dunk her bread in her mutton stew and dumplings for fear of her putting her foot in it when we were all chatting about Vince. I can’t blame Lizzie – she’s new and she’s learning. She has to obey Brody like the rest of us. But now I know Brody can’t be trusted and I’m worried. If she’s done this, what else could she be getting up to behind our backs?

She calls herself a ‘friend’ and she wants me to tell her things and see if she can help - but friends don’t lie or try to trick you or go behind your back, do they? What do you think?
