Hetty Feather's Diary: Modern Girl

My name's Hetty Feather - and this is my diary.

The game of croquet may have been boys versus girls but it still wasn’t fair! Robert cheated and made horrible remarks to Master Edwin – and he got away with it because of who he was: Lady Grenford’s snooty grandson

No wonder Miss Emily wants equal rights for women and I agree with her. Men can vote and women can’t – it’s like they think women aren’t as clever as men! It’s not fair, I want a say in my own future too! But even for Emily, she might live in a beautiful house and have servants and everything she wants, but her parents aren’t very keen on her wanting to be a doctor.

Women becoming doctors is a new thing, you see. Mainly, it’s a man’s job. Emily told me that there is the London School of Medicine for Women and she’d love to go there but I’m still not sure Mr. Calendar would allow it! And Lady Grenford would hate it! She believes children and servants should be seen and not heard – and that young ladies like Emily should do as they’re told. Well, I’m too modern for that. I agree with Emily.

I think girls should vote too and one day be treated just the same as men. That’s what I like about Emily, she stands up for what she believes in. Like I stood up to Matron.

What do you believe in and think is worth standing up for?

I finished my duties in record time, read my responses below.

Hetty Feather's replies: xunchaXOXO: I believe that all women should always be treated equally in everything, not just voting. So what if Miss Emily wants to become a doctor any lady should always choose what they want to do rather than having they lives planned out for them as if they are behind someone and that person is always controlling them. Hetty Feather: Dear xunchaXOXO, Thank you for your letter. I think Emily would make a brilliant doctor. She’s clever and caring. When Edwin was ill from a plant in the garden, she hardly left his side. It doesn’t matter if she’s a girl. I hope things change in the future and life is fair for everyone! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather's replies: U17029750: Every one should be equal and I think matron is lying about the baby I think she does know about it but does not want you to know. Please behave you might lose your job and then you will never get to see your mum. Hetty Feather: Dear U17029750, Thank you for your letter. Matron always scares me – that’s why I have nightmares about her. But I want to help Mrs Calendar so must do what I can. I am being careful because losing my job would be a disaster. I don’t want to end up in the dreaded workhouse! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather's replies: U17026637: Dear Hetty, I strongly believe in ‘Girls in Science’ as I really want to be a forensic scientist when I grow up. Emily wanting to be a doctor means that she shares similar interests as me and this is why I look up to her as a character. I also look up to you as you have the courage to stand up for things whether or not you are worried (not scared!!!!!) It was also the way that you showed people younger than you that being worried is ok but you just have to face your fears. This is like facing society and fighting for gender equality. Hetty Feather: Dear U17026637, Thank you for your letter. What is a forensic scientist? I’ve never heard of that before. Girls can be brave and courageous and be anything they want to be – or that’s what I believe! That’s why it’s important to face your fears and overcome them. Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather's replies: Book reader dancer: I completely agree! Some people tell me that I can't wear particular things because it is not appropriate for a young lady to where out! I think that that is ridiculous and girls should be allowed to wear whatever they want. Hetty Feather: Dear Book reader dancer, Thank you for your letter. I wish I could wear anything I wanted – but all I have is my maid’s uniform and a dress for days off. Emily has such pretty clothes. When I tried on her dress, it felt special. But I couldn’t clean the house in it, it would be ruined! Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather's replies: UnicornPrincess77: Dear Hetty Feather, I heard that women are fighting for their rights I believe that women should get treated the same anyone should if different gender , different skin colour and different personalities. Fight For Rights! Hetty Feather: Dear UnicornPrincess77, Thank you for your letter. Yes, it doesn’t matter who you are, or what you look like or believe in, everyone should be treated equally. That’s why I like standing up for people and making life fair. Sometimes it lands me trouble – but maybe it’s worth it? Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather's replies: Butterfly Daisy Glitter: Dear Hetty, I think Emily will one day become a wonderful doctor and she should stand up for what she believes in and follow her dreams. Hetty Feather: Dear Butterfly Daisy Glitter, Thank you for your letter. I agree! I hope Emily gets the education she wants and deserves. Perhaps she could even go to University like Henry. I don’t think Lady Grenford would be too happy about it but Emily would love it, I’m sure! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather's replies: Ghost_Girl: Dear Hetty Feather, I agree with you. Women and men, what's the difference? Nothing. Girls should be equal to men. Also, why can't Emily be a doctor? Because she isn't a man? Because girls are expected to do girl-y things? No ones the boss of her, nor you, Hetty! You should persevere like Emily, and you do! You're a real rolemodel, and so's Emily. Good luck on your journey! Hetty Feather: Dear Ghost_Girl, Thank you for your letter. There should be no difference between what women and men can achieve in life – I agree! I wish I didn’t have a boss – but Brody is housekeeper and so I have to do as she tells me. Otherwise, I’d be in big trouble that’s for sure! Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather's replies: CBBC cyan panda 11: Dear hetty Girls are just as smart as boys and it is not fair that boys are treated better just because of their gender and if no one agrees that everyone should be treated equally then something should be done it doesn't matter what gender you are or how able you are you should judged on personality not gender! Hetty Feather: Dear CBBC cyan panda 11, Thank you for your letter. I wish everyone did agree that boys and girls are the same! But when you have Lady Grenford around, who thinks Emily should learn embroidery and not much more, it makes life difficult! Girls have to stand up for themselves! Yours Hetty Feather.
