Hetty Feather's Diary: Pen Pals

My name's Hetty Feather - and this is my diary.

When that letter from Ida arrived today, my heart skipped a beat. I love getting letters – especially from my mother because I miss her so much. But this letter wasn’t good news. The old lady (whose household she works for) is moving to Bignor and as her housemaid, Ida’s moving with her. I hadn’t even heard of Bignor but from what she said it was miles away.

Luckily, when I went to clear Master Edwin’s afternoon tea from the library, I had enough time to look in a map. I found Bignor at once. It’s south of London and by the sea! I’ve never even seen the sea but I can imagine it – blue and grey, with big waves. Imagining the sea is all I can do because I’d never make it to Bignor and back on my afternoons off.

I don’t even know how I’d get there - unless a farmer could take me in his horse and cart? Or I could save up my wages to buy a ticket for the steam train but how would I afford a ticket back? But enough of the dreaming, I guess I’ll just write to her instead.

I love writing to Ida. I tell her all my news – what Sheila’s been moaning about, or if Mrs. Calendar has complimented me on my duties. I think keeping in touch with your family and friends is the most important thing in the world even though sometimes writing letters to Ida make me sad. Now she’s moved away, I keep imagining where she is and what her life is like.

I finished my duties in record time, read my responses below.

Hetty Feather replies: Puppy Girl: Dear Hetty, I do dream about faraway places. Sometimes it's great to run away to a land that is so beyond your imagination that it seems like reality. You don't have to worry about chores or illnesses or crimes. You can be free! However, running away is not the answer to everything. You must always remember to return to reality. Hetty Feather: Dear Puppy_Girl, Thank you for your letter. That’s so true. Being in a dream world is a bit like reading a book – you can escape while you’re reading but when you close the book, you must come back to reality. It’s good that I enjoy stories so much! Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: U17006986: Hetty, I do dream about faraway places. I like to close my eyes and picture all my dreams in one place and that one day I will visit it. You don't need to be stressed about chores and work all you need to do close your eyes and run away. Hetty Feather: Dear U17006986, Thank you for your letter. I often find myself letting my thoughts wander as I’m dusting! I hate dusting – that’s why I imagine being somewhere else. I can’t close my eye though, if I knocked over an ornament I’d be in serious trouble! Yours Hetty Feather
Hetty Feather replies: Book reader dancer: Dear Hetty, I dream about a faraway place all the time. Every night before I drift off to sleep, I think about a deserted island I once found whilst exploring on holiday in Scotland, I always think about it because that is where I read my favourite book, I don't think I'll ever read such as beautiful book again, maybe it was the magic of the island? I should return to reality in your case though and help Mrs Calendar find Charles first, good luck! Hetty Feather: Dear Book reader dancer, Thank you for your letter. That sounds like a beautiful way to go to sleep – I hope you have lovely dreams of the Scottish island! I lie awake thinking about helping Mrs. Calendar. But is finding Charles just a dream too? Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: Wildcat: My whole life is in a far away place. I just need to figure out how to get back. It’s sort of the same for you. Ida will still write. You know where she is. One day you’ll reach there. Even if it takes ten years. Hetty Feather: Dear Wildcat, Thank you for your letter. I spend such a lot of time thinking of Ida I feel like I’m there in Bignor with her. I imagine the house she’s in and the sea view. You’re right - I hope that I get there, one day. But I hope it’s faster than in ten years! Yours Hetty Feather
Hetty Feather replies: TheWackyWeirdo: Dear Hetty, I dream about going to the land of all the characters I make up in my head sometimes. I also think of going to the places the characters in stories are in. Don't worry about Ida, I have a feeling you're going to see her again very, very soon! Hettv Feather
Hetty Feather replies: BlueCosmicGymnast12: Dear Hetty, I dream about faraway places all the time and imagine what life would be like and make up stories about me living there.I hope things improve and hopefully soon enough you’ll even be able to see Ida, but in the meantime keep writing to her. Hetty Feather: Dear BlueCosmicGymnast12, Thank you for your letter. I’m imagining that your faraway places are very far away, like a tropical island in the middle of the ocean! I’ve only seen pictures in books of course… I will write to Ida, as often I can! Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: superbohay1: Dear Hetty, Yes when I sleep I imagine the most wonderful places which are millions of miles away so I guess we both have something in common. Yours sincerely Superbohay1. Hetty Feather: Dear superbohay1, Thank you for your letter. You sound just like me – full of imagination and daydreams! If you can imagine another place, you can also imagine how other people feel – and it makes you a better friend! That’s what I think anyway. Yours Hetty Feather.

Hetty Feather replies: lucy: Dear Hetty, I am writing to tell you not to worry as you do not know what the future holds. You could see and visit your Mother Ida in the future. Meanwhile keep on writing or her as I have to you. Do not worry as you have lots to experience and hold on to your journey not your destination. Hetty Feather: Dear lucy, Thank you for your letter. That’s a good way to think – you have to live your life in the moment and not worry about where it’s taking you. I know I want to be with Ida but if she’s not here, she’s still a part of me! When I write, I’ll tell her that! Yours Hetty Feather.
