Hetty Feather's Diary: Mud-fight

I thought adults were supposed to be wise! But sometimes they just don’t make sense to me!

Especially Lady Grenford! Why would she want to shut Master Edwin away so he can’t be seen? Edwin might be in a wheel-chair but he loves having fun and adventure just like the rest of us – and today proved it! You should have seen the state of his waistcoat and britches from that mud-fight. I should know - it took half an hour scouring the muck out with a scrubbing brush. Usually, I hate doing laundry! My hands were red and nearly raw by the time I’d finished – but because it was Edwin and because he’d had such a good time, somehow, today I didn’t mind at all.

In fact, I thought – good for him, that showed stuffy old Grenford that you’re a boy after all! And because of Edwin, at last, we’re all free of her. I even heard Mr Calendar tell Mrs Calendar at supper that he was glad to see the back of her. If only he could tell Lady Grenford that to her face, but no one would dare, especially not a servant like me! That’s the trouble when manners need to be kept and rules have to be obeyed – no one tells the truth and people like Edwin end up suffering.

Is it better to speak out and stand up for someone and then face getting punished or do you stick to the rules?
