Hetty Feather's Diary: Secret Keeper

My name's Hetty Feather - and this is my diary.

It seems I’m always keeping secrets! Now I’m scared because I know Mrs Calendar’s biggest secret of all – that she has a long-lost son who she gave away.

Last night, I could hardly sleep because of it. I could hear Baby William crying downstairs in the house and it just kept reminding me! I lay there, tossing and turning, hoping I wouldn’t wake Sheila up because then she’d want to know why – and I was so worried, I might even have told her! Then, I wouldn’t be just scared, I’d be terrified of it all getting back to horrid Lady Grenford.

I’d hate to think what would happen if she found out about Rosamund’s secret son. It would mean trouble for everyone – especially me! I’d be sacked on the spot. But there’s one thought that I can’t stop thinking and it almost makes me cry… That just like my mother Ida misses me and I miss her, Mrs Calendar misses her son too. Should I stay quiet about what I know or do I risk losing my job by helping Mrs Calendar find her son?

I finished my duties in record time, read my responses below.

Hetty Feather replies: StormKitten42: It is Mrs Calendar's secret, therefore it is not yours to tell. Hetty Feather: Dear StormKitten42, Thanks for your letter. I agree! It is Mrs. Calendar’s secret and I really should keep it to myself. However, there’s a child out there separated from its mother, just like I was. I must stay busy and do my duties, it’s the only time I don’t think about it… Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: lunalovegood II: Hetty you should do what your heart tells you. Would you rather keep your job or her find her lost son? He must be feeling how you felt before you found Ida. It's up to you, Hetty. Hetty Feather: Dear lunalovegood II, Thanks for your letter. My heart tells me that I need to find her lost son, but my head tells me I have to be sensible and keep my position. But what if Mrs. Calendar never finds her son? Is that my fault? If only my choice was easy… Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: ImaginePonies: It depends if you like your job. If you do, stay quiet. If you don't like it, help her. I would help though because it's kind. Hetty Feather: Dear ImaginePonies, Thanks for your letter. I could have worse jobs than working at Calendar Hall. If I lose this job, I could end up in the workhouse! I like being kind, but this is dangerous too. It’s a difficult decision to make… Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: SailingMonkey: Dear Hetty, First I would like to say congrats for delivering a baby successfully. I think you should wait a little while before spreading the secret. Put yourself in Mrs Calendar's shoes and think about what you would like if you were her. Then you must think about whether you would want something you said WHEN YOU WERE ILL to be spread. In conclusion I personally would not tell anyone apart from maybe Ida. Hetty Feather: Dear SailingMonkey, Thanks for your letter. You’re right – Mrs Calendar had just had a baby, delivered by me! But whether she was feeling unwell or not, she told me her secret. If only Ida was here, I know she’d know what to do… Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: harrypotteranimalover: maybe her son was a boy at the hospital maybe even 1 of your friends. Hetty Feather: Dear harrypotteranimalover, Thanks for your letter. I hadn’t thought of that! But all our names were changed at the Foundling Hospital, so how could I know? I found Ida because she found me – I was one of the lucky ones… Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: Blob: I think that Hetty should keep quiet and try to forget about it and if she can't then imagine she dreamt it, because its not her secret to tell and I don't think that Mrs Calendar would like you sharing her secret and I don't think that she was thinking straight at the time.. Hetty Feather: Dear Blob, Thanks for your letter. I imagine so many things! That’s part of my problem. I imagine her son is lost and lonely and perhaps if I tell someone, he’ll be found. But you’re right – Mrs Calendar is my employer. If I help her, I could lose my job… Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: Cloud topaz pony: Hello Hetty! I think you should risk it. Mrs Calendar has helped you, so you should help her. You have got out of tricky situations before, and you are a good person. Hetty Feather: Dear Cloud topaz pony, Thanks for your letter. I like taking risks and having adventures – but sometimes it gets me into trouble! If I ask my friends to help me, it could get them into trouble too. I want to help Mrs Calendar but perhaps it’s too risky… Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: koala: I think you should tell Ida you can trust her and she has been through the same then I think you should look for Charles because your brave and you have been through lots of things like that so you will know what to be prepared for. Hetty Feather: Dear Koala, Thanks for your letter. I’d like to go to Ida and ask her advice but my day off was cancelled. I could write to her but that would take a while. I know I’ve been brave in the past but if I get found out, I’d have to leave Calendar Hall! I’d miss Gideon and my friends… Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: LilacWinteryMallard: Dear LilacWinteryMallard, Thanks for your letter. Mrs Calendar being happy matters a lot – but if I lose my job I’d be on the streets! I’d have no home and no one to look after me. I wish there was a way to find her son and to keep my job… Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: U16664256: Dear Hetty, I think you should ask Mrs Calendar what she thinks is the best thing to do as it is her child. I believe that would probably be the best way to not upset her in anyway. If she doesn't want you to do anything then don't but if she wants help then try as hard as you can to help her. She would probably really appreciate that. Also how did it feel delivering a baby successfully? You must feel very proud. P.S - How cute is the baby? Hetty Feather: Dear U16664256, Thanks for your letter. The baby is very cute! Delivering him was scary – but I do feel proud! I’d like to ask Mrs. Calendar what to do but I’m afraid someone could find out. Constance is always snooping about! But if I do nothing then that’s not helpful either… Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: U16987021: Dear Hetty , You should support Mrs Calendar and keep quiet, think how upsetting it would be for Emily and Edwin - plus be careful Mr Calender's Godmother is onto you. Stay quiet about the secret and stay well. P.S Find Matron? She can help you find Mrs Calender's lost child, she possibly took it and gave it away. Hetty Feather: Dear U16987021, Thanks for your letter. I can’t bear the thought of Matron taking away Mrs. Calendar’s baby! I want Mrs. Calendar to know that she can trust me, but I feel so bad if I don’t do anything to help. I like making things right but how can I do that this time…? Yours Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather replies: U16982703: Hey Hetty, You are a foundling girl who knows about reuniting families and has been through a lot. Help Mrs Calendar, you know what its like to be away from mothers and hopefully you will keep your job. Hetty Feather: Dear U16982703, Thanks for your letter. I know exactly how it feels to be separated from Ida but to find Mrs. Calendar’s son, I don’t know where to start. If I was found out, I wouldn’t be a servant anymore! I’m not sure who to trust… Yours Hetty Feather.
