The Blue Peter Doctor Who Competition Privacy Notice for Parents/Guardians

Your trust is very important to us. This means the BBC is committed to protecting the privacy and security of your personal data. It is important that you read this notice so that you are aware of how and why we are using such personal data. This privacy notice describes how we collect and use personal data about you during and after your relationship with us, in accordance with data protection law.
Why are we doing this and how can you participate?
The BBC is asking young viewers aged between 5 -15 years old to draw some amazing fan art to celebrate the 60th birthday of Doctor Who and tell us why they would like to go behind the scenes on the Doctor Who set.
The winner will get an exclusive VIP tour of the top-secret Doctor Who set and be one of the first members of the public to see the new era TARDIS and meet the incredible Doctor Who design team. The winner will also receive an orange competition winner’s badge.
The top 500 competition runners up will receive a special limited-edition Doctor Who 60th Birthday Badge.
The BBC will collect the personal data via an online platform used by the BBC. There is also an option to send your artwork by post.
If the child or their artwork appear on our broadcast this may include the programme being available online and/or on demand and may be used again in a future broadcast. The child or their artwork may also be used for promotional purposes on the BBC’s social media channels.

What personal data will the BBC collect?
The BBC will collect and process the following personal data about your child:
Full name
Date of birth
Age
Hometown
Doctor Who fan art
The BBC will collect and process the following personal data about you (parent/guardian):
Full name
Email address
Contact telephone number
Home address
The BBC may collect and process the following special category data about your child if you wish to share it with us for accessibility reasons:

Who is the Data Controller?
The BBC (as the “Commissioner” of Blue Peter) and BBC Studios (as the “Producer” of Blue Peter) are together “joint data controllers” of your personal data for this competition. This means that collectively, the BBC and BBC Studios decide what your personal data is used for, and the ways in which it is processed. For the avoidance of doubt, your personal data will be collected and processed solely for the purposes set out in this privacy notice. As joint data controllers, the BBC and BBC Studios are responsible for complying with data protection law.
Lawful basis for processing your personal data
The legal basis on which the BBC processes your and your child’s personal data is the performance of its public task. The BBC’s role is to act in the public interest and to serve all audiences with content which informs, educates, and entertains.
This is consistent with the BBC’s wider public purposes under its Royal Charter which states that the BBC should:
“…support learning for people of all ages: the BBC should help everyone learn about different subjects in ways they will find accessible, engaging, inspiring and challenging. The BBC should provide specialist educational content to help support learning for children and teenagers across the United Kingdom. It should encourage people to explore new subjects and participate in new activities through partnerships with educational, sporting and cultural institutions.”
We also have a legal obligation to process the personal data of the winners in order to comply with relevant competition regulations.
The legal basis on which the BBC Studios processes your and your child’s personal data is the BBC Studios legitimate interest in assisting the BBC in meeting its Charter obligations.
The additional processing condition under which the BBC and BBC studios processes your child’s special category data (if applicable) is substantial public interest (Schedule 1 of the DPA 2018, 8.) Equality of opportunity or treatment.
Sharing your personal data
The BBC and BBC Studios work with our approved third-party providers who help us to provide some of our services. These partners only use your personal data on behalf of the BBC and BBC Studios and not independently. We currently use a third-party data storage provider to store your data collected through the uploader form.
We may share personal data with a third party where required or permitted by law.
Retaining your personal data
The BBC and BBC Studios will retain the submission and any associated personal data for twelve (12) months from the date of the upload.
We keep records of the winners, and their parents/guardians for two (2) years for auditing and compliance purposes.
If your child or their artwork appears on BBC programming or BBC promotional content, this will be retained and archived in perpetuity by the BBC.
Your personal data will be stored in the UK and the European Economic Area (EEA).
Your rights and more information
You have rights under data protection law:
You can request a copy of the personal data the BBC and/or BBC Studios store about you.
You have the right to request that we rectify any inaccurate or incomplete personal data that we hold about you.
You have the right to ask for the personal data we collect about you to be deleted, however there are limitations and exceptions to this right which may entitle the BBC and/or BBC Studios to refuse your request.
In certain circumstances you have the right to restrict the processing of your personal data, or to object to the processing of your personal data.
You have the right to ask that we transfer the personal data to you or to another organisation, in certain circumstances.
