Diamond Time Capsule Competition Terms and Conditions
Blue Peter is creating a new time capsule for its 60th birthday year, and we want YOU to be part of it! Here are the terms and conditions for entry.
Rules for Blue Peter’s Diamond Time Capsule Competition
1. Blue Peter’s Diamond Time Capsule Competition (the “Competition”) is open to all UK residents (including residents of the Channel Islands and the Isle Of Man) aged between 6 and 15 years of age on Wednesday 11th July 2018 (the closing date for entries) except the children or close relatives of BBC employees, contributors, contractors, BBC Group company employees, The National Archives employees or any persons closely connected with the Competition. The BBC reserves the right to request proof of age for entrants as well as parent’s or guardian’s consent and necessary state of health. Only one entry per person may be submitted. No joint entries will be allowed.
2. To enter the Competition entrants must:
Create an original decorative time capsule design.
Submit your drawing of the time capsule design for the Blue Peter Diamond Time Capsule on the form provided.
Write a message for children watching Blue Peter in the year 2038 when the Blue Peter Diamond Time Capsule will be opened. Every message will be placed and then sealed into the time capsule until 2038.
Vote for their top 10 favourite items to include in the Diamond Time Capsule out of a top 20 list provided.
3. Entry is via the entry form which can only be downloaded from the Blue Peter website.
4. If entrants submit more than one entry, we will judge the first entry received and disregard the others.
5. The entry must be the entrant’s own original work and not be defamatory nor breach any copyright or contain anything that could be deemed offensive.
6. All submissions must include the entrant’s: name, age, date of birth, address including postcode, parent/guardian’s name and two contact telephone numbers (primary and backup) which can be filled in on the appropriate sections of the entry form. Entrants should ask their parent/guardian’s permission to enter the Competition and ensure that they have read the terms and conditions. This must be confirmed by a parent/guardian completing the tick box on the entry form. The telephone number provided must allow your parent/guardian to be contacted between 16:00 on Friday 13th July and 18:00 on Tuesday 17th July and on Thursday 19th July and Friday 20th July 2018.
7. All entrants must enter the Competition by submitting their entry form by post to: Blue Peter’s Diamond Time Capsule Competition, BBC Bridge House, MediaCityUK, M50 2BH.
8. Entries must be RECEIVED by no later than 12 noon on Wednesday 11th July 2018. Late, incomplete or illegible entries or entries with insufficient postage will be disqualified. The BBC cannot take any responsibility for any technical failure or malfunction, including but not limited to any affecting postal services, which may result in any entry being delayed, lost or not properly registered or recorded. The BBC will not be able to return entries.
9. By submitting an entry for the Competition, the entrant’s parent/guardian is deemed to have given consent for the entry to be published free of charge by the BBC/BBC Studios in all media, including television, print and internet, for all purposes as it wishes. Blue Peter may wish to display entries containing an entrant’s name, age and town or county, in all of the above instances working in line with the BBC’s Child Protection Policy, to prevent jigsaw identification of any entrant. Blue Peter may wish to display entries containing an entrant’s name, age and town or county in the studio and in a website gallery. No details other than the entrant’s first name and age will enter the time capsule alongside the message they have written for children watching Blue Peter in 2038. 10. For editorial reasons, it is necessary for the BBC to acquire ownership of all rights in the winning entry and it is a condition of entry that the winner’s parent/guardian will sign any additional documentation in order to assign all rights to the BBC/BBC Studios and to waive all moral rights the winner may have in the winning entry. If you have any concerns about this requirement, we would advise you not to enter.
11. All entries will be judged in the first instance by members of the Blue Peter production team and representatives from The National Archives. This first judging panel will decide which entries should be put forward to the second stage of judging. The first judging round will select the 10 best entries for each of the following age categories:
Category 1: Entrants aged 6-8
Category 2: Entrants aged 9-11
Category 3: Entrants aged 12-15
For each age category 3 back-up entries will be ranked in order of merit to act as standbys to replace any entries that in the verification process need to be excluded from the competition. During judging equal weighting will be given to the time capsule design and the explanatory paragraph.
12. 30 entries in total will go through from the first round of judging to the second round of judging.
13. The second judging stage will look at the 10 best entries for each age category (30 entries in total) and be carried out by a judging panel of representatives from The National Archives, Blue Peter including Ewan Vinnicombe (Editor – Blue Peter) and Blue Peter presenters. The panel may change subject to availability. From the 30 entries, the panel will choose a top entry for each age category (3 top entries in total). The 3 top entries will be ranked in merit order and an overall winner will be chosen.
Criteria
14. All entries will be judged against the following criteria:
Design – a decorative design must be created that celebrates Blue Peter’s Big Birthday, the time capsules and the year 2018.
Original – the design must be unique, but can use Blue Peter elements within it but must not replicate any existing logos / designs outside of Blue Peter.
Creative – the design must be original, imaginative and striking.
Paragraph – an interesting message for children watching Blue Peter in the year 2038 when the Blue Peter Diamond Time Capsule will be opened.
15. The prizes consist of:
1st Prize: 1 x Winner
Their design is created into the wrapping of the 2018 time capsule.
An invitation to attend the day when the time capsule is placed into The National Archives. The day will include an exclusive tour of The National Archives and the chance to meet past Blue Peter presenters.
Attend the Blue Peter studio for the reveal of the designs at MediaCityUK on Blue Peter’s Big Birthday – Tuesday 16th October 2018.

The top 30 designs that go through to the second round of judging will receive a Blue Peter Orange competition badge.
16. The winners must be available on the following dates: Monday 10th September 2018 to attend the day when the time capsule is placed into The National Archive and Tuesday 16th October 2018 at the Blue Peter studio at MediaCityUK, to record the announcement of the winning entries. The winner must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
17. These dates are non-movable, but we reserve the right to change them due to editorial/production considerations.
18. The BBC will obtain an appropriate child licence for each of the winners if needed. Reasonable travel, food, accommodation costs will be provided by the BBC for the winning child and a parent or guardian to appear on Blue Peter and to attend the filming of the time capsule reveal at The National Archives. The winners will be deemed to have agreed to be filmed during their days on location by the Blue Peter Production team. The parent/guardian of the winner will be required to sign contributor consent forms on behalf of their child/ward and themselves to allow the BBC to use the contributions in all media for all purposes.
19. Telephone calls will be made to the 30 short listed entrants (and their parent/guardians) between 16:00 on Friday 13th July and 18:00 on Tuesday 17th July in order to check eligibility. Phone calls will also be made to the backup entries which will be taken through to the second stage of judging, to be used if any of the top 30 are not eligible. You will also need to be available to take a phone call on Thursday 19th July and Friday 20th July 2018. If an entrant (including parent/guardian) is unable to be contacted after reasonable attempts have been made to do so, the BBC reserves the right to offer their place to the next best entrant. Unsuccessful entrants will not be contacted. Entries cannot be returned to entrants.
20. The prizes will be as stated. The prizes cannot be transferred and there is no cash alternative.
21. The winner will be notified between Thursday 19th July and Friday 20th July 2018 by telephone, as per the contact details provided in their entries. In the event of the winners being unable to be contacted, after reasonable attempts have been made, or being unable to attend the Blue Peter filming or if any of the winners are found to be in breach of the rules or fail to take up their prize for any reason, including illness, unavailability, problems in having consent for absence from school, licensing difficulties OR problems with obtaining a sign off from their doctor regarding state of health to participate, the BBC reserves the right to offer the prize to a top runner-up who will be ranked in order of merit but it is not obliged to do so.
22. The BBC’s and the judges’ decision as to the winner is final. No correspondence relating to the Competition will be entered into.
23. Entrants will be expected to take part in post-Competition publicity for the BBC.
24. The BBC reserves the right to cancel the Competition or change any of these rules at any stage if deemed necessary in its opinion or if circumstances arise outside of its control. Any such changes will be duly communicated. The BBC cannot be held responsible for any unforeseen events relating to the cancellation of the Diamond Time Capsule Competition.
25. The parent/guardian of an applicant is required to accept these terms and conditions by way of tick box for the entry to be valid.
26. The Competition complies with the BBC Code of Conduct for Competitions and Voting, which can be found on: http://www.bbc.co.uk/editorialguidelines/guidelines/appendix2
27. The BBC and The National Archives or any other organisation associated with the Competition accepts no liability for any damage, loss, liabilities (including direct, indirect, incidental, consequential or punitive damage) injury or disappointment incurred or suffered by you as a result of entering the Competition, not being able to enter into the Competition or accepting any of the prizes. Nothing shall exclude the liability of the BBC or The National Archives for (i) fraudulent misrepresentation, (ii) for death or personal injury as a result of that party's negligence, or (iii) any other cause of action which cannot be limited or excluded under applicable law. In no event shall the BBC or The National Archives and/or any other organisation associated with the Competition’s total liability to you for all damages, losses, or causes of action exceed the price of the relevant prize.
28. If any of these clauses should be determined to be illegal, invalid or otherwise unenforceable then it shall be severed and deleted from these terms and conditions and the remaining clauses shall survive, remain in full force and effect.
29. These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any claim, dispute or matter arising under or in connection with these Terms and Conditions.
