Bristol's
lead in the Clipper round-the-world race is under threat after Jersey
won the latest bout of the sailing challenge.
She is now just two points ahead, having finished in fourth place
in a race from Hong Kong to Singapore which has been beset with difficulties.
The race was officially stopped at 0300 GMT on 25 April after it was
deemed that the fleet would not be able to reach the Raffles Marina
finish line in the time allowed. Jersey still had 300 miles to go
when the ruling was announced.
With Race 10 now over, the fleet now face the long run into Raffles
Marina on the Western shores of Singapore facing the Straits of Johor.
The five remaining yachts had positions recorded when their race was
stopped, and are now converging on the three lead boats.
With only light winds expected, the remaining 300-mile passage will
be made with the boats motor sailing when ever possible, and also
towing each other, an evolution that can save up to 40% of the fuel.
The Clipper fleet will reach Raffles Marina on Saturday night, 28th
April 2001, a race spokeswoman said. |
