On this Sunday’s Now Playing we celebrate Hip Hop. HIP HOP?! Are you hip hopping mad mate? This is 6 Music. Well yes, we are, but that’s not the point. Let me explain first and then point out where you can go, suggestion-wise of course! The last couple of weeks in Hip Hop land have been busy…

De La Soul released a new track with Snoop Dogg called ‘Pain’ (it’s really good)
Speaking of Snoop, he himself announced last week he was releasing a follow-up to his 1993 debut ‘Doggystyle’
The Fugees' ‘Killing Me Softly' had its 20th birthday on Tuesday 31st May
The Prophets of Rage, a super group comprised of RATM, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill made their TV debut
Jurassic 5’s first single for a very long time, called ‘Customer Service’, is due for release on the 5th June. Their customer service is awful by the way, waited ages for them to deliver a new song…
PLUS ScHoolboy Q has a new album dropping in July
ALSO Run The Jewels tease new album clip for 'RTJ3'….is all this enough of a reason? Us lot at Now Playing thought so.
Where do you go with suggestions? Well, ALL of the above obvs but also:
- Your favourite rappers from Public Enemy to Run DMC, De La Soul or Nas
- SAMPLES: Warren G’s Regulate heavily samples Michael McDonalds ‘I Can’t Forget’ or Tupac’s California sampling Joe Cocker’s ‘Woman to Woman’
- Stuff from those behind the beats like Afrika Bambaataa and DJ Premier
- Contemporary artists like Kendrick Lamar, A-Trak, Jay-Z or Kanye West
- How about other genres and artists with a strong social message – the Sex Pistols through to Bob Marley to Dylan.
- Or the roots of hip-hop – great poets like Gil Scott-Heron, disco…and reggae
You pick the music, so get your Hip Hop inspired suggestions to Tom via Twitter using #HipHop6Music to help create a playlist. Comment on the Now Playing Facebook page, here on the blog, email nowplaying@bbc.co.uk or drag tracks onto our Spotify playlist.
