What were holidays like in the past?

Let’s look at what holidays were like around 100 years ago. This may be when your great-great-grandparents were alive.

There are some things you cannot see in these pictures.

  • 100 years ago factories would close and everyone would have the week off work. This was called wakes week.
  • People travelled by train to the coast.
  • The fun at the seaside included games on the beach, walking on the pier, donkey rides and Punch & Judy shows.

  • People could travel to camps by train or by car.
  • The first holiday camps in the UK opened in the 1890s.
  • Holiday camps became very popular between the 1930s and the 1960s.
  • There would be lots of things to do at camps, like cycling, ballroom dancing and swimming.
