How to celebrate the end of term in a pandemic

Part of Learn & revise

This year, the last day of term will probably feel quite anti-climatic.

It’s usually a time when you get doss lessons, have loads of events to look forward to, and even in some cases walk out of your school gates for the very last time.

Even if it’s not what you were expecting, there’s no reason why you can’t celebrate the end of the year in style. Here’s some inspiration from us to get you started!

Sign a leaver's shirt

Signing your friend’s white shirt on the last day of school is a time-honoured tradition, just as your message disappearing in the rain is.

But unfortunately, this simply won’t be possible this year with social distancing rules in place. But we have a solution! Keep an eye on @BBCBitesize on Instagram where you'll be able to virtually sign the Bitesize Daily shirt.

Alternatively, you could print our shirt design off, scribble your message and send it to a friend you know would really love it (and recycle it later!). Who doesn’t love receiving post?”

Make a personalised graduation hat

Graduation hats (or mortar boards, which is the fancy name for them) are a staple part of university graduation ceremonies, however it’s not unheard of for secondary and even primary schools to use them now, too.

Their characteristic square top is the perfect shape to whack on a custom design, and people certainly have been creative over the years. This is something you can try doing at home - cut out a square the size of the hat you're using, and draw something that you think sums up your time at school, or your personality. You don't even have to be finishing school to do this - graduating any year is important to celebrate!

If you can’t get your hands on a mortarboard (and to be fair, it’s quite unlikely you’ll have one just lying around), why not stick your design on a cap, or floppy sun hat?

Have a school leavers' party with Life Hacks

You might be gutted that you’re missing out on your prom, or you might be thrilled to be escaping your leavers' ‘disco’ and all the naff decorations that come with it.

Either way, you have the opportunity to have the most amazing party instead, and all from the comfort of your own living room!

Life Hacks on Radio 1 have collaborated with Bitesize to bring the ultimate end of year DJ set that you can groove to at home. Joel Corry was on the decks from 3pm on Sunday 19 July, and now you can catch his set on BBC Sounds - get ready to throw some shapes!

And get dressed up for it!

Sometimes it can be really fun and make you feel amazing to get all dressed up, even if you have nowhere to go. Before you relisten to Life Hacks, why not get your best garms on and strut your stuff around the living room? Category is: school disco chic!

Have an awards ceremony

Is your best mate so good at debating that you can see them in the House of Commons one day? Is someone in your class on TikTok so much you can see them being the next Charli D’Amelio? Or have you seen someone in science lessons with such a flair for balancing equations that you’re pretty sure they’ll be getting a Nobel Prize at some point in the future?

Then why not have a glittering virtual awards ceremony and bestow upon them these most coveted accolades. If you're stuck for ideas, we have some here that will be on the Bitesize Instagram account, so you can tag your friends in them there.
