
3. Scruffy and Scar
Two years on, the line up had changed yet again. Now 10, Khali was at last enjoying stability under a coalition of two probably unrelated males, Scar and Scruffy. The larger-maned of the two, Scar, appeared to attract most female attention and was probably father to the majority of the pride's 12 cubs.
The younger male, Scruffy, evidently got something out of the partnership. By teaming up with an older male, he stood a greater chance of siring cubs of his own one day. Meanwhile he was able to enjoy all the other benefits of lion social life.
