Listener Takeover- 05.08.07 - Thom Weller and Justin HarperThom Weller
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 – The Message Just one of those timeless tunes that kids will be dancing to for decades, cooler than the other side of the pillow.
Fujiya and Miyagi – Collarbone You can’t help but nod your head to this… or you have no hope!
CSS – Let’s Make Love (Spank Rock Remix) A good twist on a wicked tune, shame it got re-released as it’ll get played to death… deservedly so though I feel!
Van She – Kelly (Alan Braxe and Fred Falke Mix) This track is so good, it makes you wanna cry, hug the person next you and jump around like a nerd… it’s a beautiful thing
Digitalism – Zdarlight (Moonlight Edition) The bassline and the melody go so well, just general niceness.
The Mogs – Kelly Blame (Instrumental Version) Everything is called electro at the moment. This tune is actually electro.
Chicken Lips – He Not In When this tune drops you know everyone will be dancing if they know what’s what.
Audio Bully’s – We Don’t Care Sounds like the Stranglers made a tune with Basement Jaxx. Rowdy anthem.
Alter Ego – Rocker Germans can make the best bleeps (when they want to)
The Black Ghosts – Face (The Teenagers Remix) Sounds like the Stranglers made a tune with Basement Jaxx. Rowdy anthem.
New Young Pony Club – The Bomb (Kaos Disco Bomb Extended Dub) Germans can make the best bleeps (when they want to)
Whitey – Two Face (Glimmer Edit) Lush breakdown, cowbells, everything you want really.
Soulwax – Talking (Nite Version) It’s like Carl Craig remixed it or something, you wait for ages and it keeps building and building
Errors – Salut! France A little bit of Scottish action for my mate Ally. I like the Scottish, this tune is another reason why!
Justin Harper
The Stooges – 1970 ‘Out of my mind on Saturday night…’. Has there been a better opening line for a rock song? Completely unhinged, so brilliant.
The Fall – Bill Is Dead Proof that The Fall can do pretty pop! Sort of. Could have been a big hit in somebody else’s hands, without the sarcasm being so evident.
Gogol Bordello – Start Wearing Purple If you can’t dance to this, you don’t have limbs. GB are one of the best live bands around right now. You will have fun.
Nouvelle Vague – Love Will Tear Us Apart Not all of the tracks given the Nouvelle Vague treatment work, and a lot people think it’s a cheap gimmick. However, this one comes off because it loses none of the sadness of the original. Chose this version because I wanted something pretty in here.
Wire Jesus – Kingdom Come, Kingdom Go This one is from a local Reading band. I think they do something different (er, let’s say pagan indie prog) that is never going to be particularly trendy and for that I admire them. Also, Amy has a beautiful voice, ably demonstrated here.
The Creation – Biff Bang Pow (live) Upping the tempo again, this one’s a good time rock track by the 60s cult band. This version is unreleased but is included with the permission of Eddie Philips (composer).
Movietone – Hydra I used to spend weekends in Bristol in the 90s and discovered this band playing a ‘Tea & Cakes’ Sunday evening gathering in an old converted chapel. Complete with strings and horns there is a lot going on, although it comes out with a very minimalist feel. Perfect for a Sunday evening.
King of the Slums – Fanciable Headcase For the funkiness, the dissonance and the line ‘I’ll be your vicious British boyfriend, you can be my fanciable headcase..’
Nearly God – Poems This is dark mellow sit down groove mood music. Just make sure your sub woofer is secure. I think this is as good as anything Tricky has done.
Tom Waits – Pasties & G-Strings To lighten the mood with some Waitsian humour.
Tinariwen – Cler Achel For a little pick up with some funky North African blues. Although I have no idea what they are singing, it’s got soul.
Nick Cave – Brother, My Cup Is Empty Nick Cave is probably my favourite song writer and his music with the Bad Seeds (and the Birthday Party before) has an intensity which is, I’d say, unmatched. This track is a typical Bad Seeds re-interpretation of early delta blues with a bad narrator.
Elliot Smith – Waltz #2 This is my favourite Elliott Smith song, It has a resigned, strangely comforting melancholy and a great tune.
Ooberman – Shorley Wall Hmm lush, this is cleansing, romantic and the spoken word bit towards the end is so gorgeous it’s erotic.
Mark Fry – The Witch
