Question and AnswerI am a hip hop producer based in Edinburgh running an independent record label. Although quite successful in my area, I am having problems breaking into the 'credible' London scene. Do you have any suggestions? Back to FAQs list
Most labels based outside London have this problem.
The key thing to remember is even some the rap / hip hop labels based in London are not successful.
Look at the records that are working in London and try to compete.
Try working with a London based label or distribution company who have an interest in your market.
Collaboration is important but bear in mind there are big markets nationwide and worldwide for good hip hop.
If it's sales you want, think 'markets' as opposed to 'areas'.
Case in point, Master Ps' No Limit Records which made no attempt to pander to what the 'credible' New York scene thought hip hop should sound like.
