Jordan Reid - who was just days away from his second birthday - was discovered lying face down in a rock pool on a beach in Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire, last week.

His mother was charged with murder on Friday.

The child's body was found shortly after 1030 BST on Tuesday by a couple walking along Coppet Hall Point beach near the holiday resort.

He was face-down in a rock pool, with his buggy nearby. A post mortem examination has since confirmed the cause of death as drowning.

Later his mother, 32-year-old Mirlene Priscilla Stewart from Birmingham, was arrested, and appeared before Carmarthen Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon charged with murder. She was remanded in custody.

Open-air

Residents and business people in Saundersfoot were extremely saddened by the child's death.

Special prayers remembering the boy and his family were said on Sunday night at an open-air service in the harbour.

St Issell's Church traditionally holds a series of services in the harbour every summer but on Sunday they dedicated the evening service to those affected by the tragedy.

The service was lead by the Canon Michael Butler.

"Tonight we will especially remember this as we are in sight of Coppet Hall beach and because it has affected the local community so deeply," he said.

"There will be prayers and words about the events of the week and hymns."

Prayers were said for Jordan and his family, as well as for the police, coastguards, and others touched by the tragedy

"They have had a harrowing time - there are going to be representatives there tonight from them," Mr Butler added.

He said he had been given a posy by the couple who discovered the boy's body and, after the service, he planned place it on the rocks where Jordan was found.

Dyfed Powys Police confirmed on Friday that Jordan's mother had been charged in connection with his death.

Mirlene Priscilla Stewart appeared before Carmarthen Magistrates on Friday afternoon and was remanded in custody.

The picturesque sandy stretch of beach on which the boy's body was found is close to the resorts of Tenby and Saundersfoot and is visited by thousands of tourists every year.
