Bangladeshi NGO leader arrested
The police in Bangladesh say they have arrested a top official of one of the country's largest non-governmental organizations, Proshika. The authorities allege that Omar Tarek Chowdhury, a deputy director of Proshika, had plans to disturb communal harmony between Muslims and Hindus in Bangladesh. They said Mr Chowdhury had been trying to send a report on a series of alleged attacks on Hindus across Bangladesh to an address in India. Proskiha described Mr Chowdhury's arrest as a violation of human rights. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
