GST progress as rules approved
|
|
States members have approved regulations for the introduction of the goods and services tax (GST) in Jersey next year.
The law has been passed but members were asked to debate the technical details and exemptions to the tax such as childcare and education.
The regulations were adopted with the approval of a scrutiny panel.
From 1 May 2008 an extra 3% will be added to most goods and services including clothing and food.
Supporters of the tax argue it is needed to make up money which will be lost to the government once a new low tax system for businesses comes in.
