Elderly group discusses tax rise
A 5% tax rise on goods and services might affect lower income families in Jersey, says a residents' group.

The proposed levy, which has been controversial, could be introduced as early as 2007.

The Senior Citizens' Association is meeting on Saturday ahead of a States debate on the issue next month.

If there is enough support against the rise the group's chairman, Daphne Minihane, hopes people will join in a protest on the day it is debated.

The aim of the tax is to correct a budget deficit in the island which is also introducing a zero rate corporation tax.

Ms Minihane believes people living in Jersey are already paying too much.
