Parole system 'needed' at prison
La Moye Prison sign
A new wing has recently been opened at La Moye Prison
Jersey's La Moye Prison could be overcrowded again by the end of the year, according to the politician in charge of the prison system.

The prison has just opened a new wing, but Home Affairs president, Senator Wendy Kinnard, said the island needed to introduce a parole system as a matter of urgency.

It was hoped the new wing would address some of the chronic overcrowding problems at the prison.

But Senator Kinnard said that if the courts continued to jail the same number of people each month, the problem would resurface in a matter of months.

She said trustworthy prisoners should be eligible for early release under a parole system.

"Other communities have parole and that is one of the ways they can effectively manage the prison population," she said.

The island spends thousands of pounds a year sending prisoners to the UK when La Moye is too full.
