Means testing abolished
States of Jersey
Members will be able to claim £29,000 income support
Jersey's politicians have voted to abolish means tests for income support, which means they will be able to claim about £29,000 a year, plus £9,000 in expenses.

Many States members say the timing of the debate was bad, coming a week before the island's budget is discussed.

But, essentially, Jersey's politicians have agreed that serving the people deserves a full-time salary.

Regardless of background and income from others sources, members will be able to claim £29,000 of income support.

States members have also approved the amount people on a pay review panel will be paid. They have agreed a figure of £20 a day.

The independent review panel will make recommendations for politicians pay for 2005.
