Tidal waters could power island
Ocean, BBC
Tidal energy could be used to replace petrol driven cars
The water surrounding Alderney could provide all the energy needs of the island within 10 years with the use of tidal power generators.

A panel reviewing alternative forms of power in the island is recommending a tidal energy commission is set up. Alderney is said to have the third strongest tidal currents in the world and it is hoped the island could tap into a free source of energy.

The panel's findings will be presented at a public meeting early next month.

It is thought tidal energy could also be used to power a desalination plant and replace the existing oil power station.

It could also be used to replace petrol with electrically driven cars.
