Guernsey is celebrating its liberation from German occupation 59 years ago.
Events got under way on Friday night and will culminate on Sunday with a ceremonial parade and street party.
Organiser Tracie Cinevan said there will be plenty of things to keep people entertained, but there is a serious reason the islanders celebrate.
Guernsey Police have asked people to be aware that Liberation Day is a family day and they should be respectful when drinking al fresco.
On Saturday afternoon memories of the deportation of Guernsey people to Germany during the Occupation will be aired.
The second of a trilogy of History Channel programmes on the period by local film maker Martin Morgan will be shown to an invited audience at the Beau Sejour leisure centre.
Mr Morgan described the tales of the deportees as very moving.
