Russians stage benefits protest
Protest in Moscow
The protesters were met by riot police
Demonstrators in Moscow have staged a protest against government plans to replace the Soviet-style benefit system with compensation payments.

Several hundred protesters gathered outside parliament waving the red banners of the Communist Party, which organised the rally.

Police arrested several protesters who stormed into the health ministry.

The bill is scheduled for its second reading in the lower house of parliament on Tuesday.

It will affect the benefits of about 30 million people, many of them pensioners and war veterans.
