The Jersey Life and Pensions Society - which represents pension practioners, including providers and advisers - said poor stock market performance could lead to shortfalls in funds.

However, States politicians have condemned the claims and said they caused distress to pensioners.

Senator Paul Routier, of the Employment and Social Security Committee, said enough cash has been built up in the pension fund to help in unforeseen circumstances.

He said over the last five years, contributions to the fund had been increased.

According to Senator Routier, this was to ensure there was not only sufficient money coming in to meet current benefit and pension expenditure, but also to meet future demands
